W14: The Power of Peers: Peer-Mediated Strategies to Support Appropriate Behavior and Social Development in Preschoolers
Having a friend in preschool is a significant predictor of long-term outcomes for young children with disabilities. This presentation will address four basic questions regarding the implementation of peer-mediated social skills interventions: 1) What are the key social skills to we need to teach to support the development of friendships, 2) How do we teach children the social skills in inclusive classroom settings, 3) How do we embed peer social skills opportunities throughout the classroom day and, 4) What are the outcomes from typical children and children with disabilities that have participated in this intervention package. This session will include demonstrations, video clips of strategies, and ideas for classroom implementation.
